Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto’s bizarre leg-before review of Sri Lanka batter Kusal Mendis has left fans confused during the second Test in Chattogram on Saturday.

Bangladesh, who were asked to field on Day One, was left frustrated after another solid start by the visitors. After a 96-run opening stand, Dimuth Karunaratne and Mendis paired up for a long stand that deflated the Bangladesh attack after Lunch.

In the 44th over, shortly before Tea, left-arm spinner Taijul Islam slid the ball in towards Mendis’ pads but the batter quickly adjusted to middle the ball towards the cover fielder.

Skipper Shanto, standing at first slip, then moved into deliberation with his bowler and the fielders to consult for a review. While none of them were visibly interested, Shanto signalled for a DRS to on-field umpire Rod Tucker. The replays showed that the ball was nowhere in line with the pads as it rebounded comfortably off the middle of Mendis’ bat.

Though Mendis (93) and Karunaratne (86) missed out on their hundreds with Bangladesh clawing back with quick wickets, Sri Lanka remained in control of proceedings, closing in on 300 runs on the opening day.

Shanto, who was appointed Bangladesh captain across formats last month, is leading in his second Test. He has also skippered in four ODIs and a solitary T20I thus far.

Festive offer

Sri Lanka had dented Shanto’s Test captaincy debut last week with a 328-run thumping in Sylhet last week. Earlier, the visitors had won the three-match T20I series 2-1, before Bangladesh bounced back in the ODIs with a 2-1 victory.
