Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest ‘unconstitutional’, against the principle of democracy

Criticising PM Modi’s government, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra regarded how Arvind Kejriwal was arrested as “unconstitutional”.

“Fight your critics in the electoral battle, confront them boldly, and of course attack their policies and working style – this is democracy. But in this way, using the power of all the institutions of the country to fulfil one’s political objective and weakening them by exerting pressure is against every principle of democracy,” wrote Priyanka Gandhi on X in Hindi.

Criticising the present situation of Delhi Chief Minister, Congress leader Udit Raj said that the heavy police security around the Delhi CM’s residence turned it into a “camp” as if Arvind Kejriwal is a “dacoit”.

“A scared dictator wants to create a dead democracy. While capturing all the institutions including the media, breaking up the parties, extorting money from companies, freezing the account of the main opposition party was not enough for the ‘devilish power’, now the arrest of the elected Chief Ministers has also become a common thing. INDIA will give a befitting reply to this,” wrote Rahul Gandhi on X.

Mentioning the freezing of Congress’ accounts and, arrest of Hemant Soren, Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit criticised the manner in which CM Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by ED officials. “What is this way of reaching someone’s house to arrest them? Be it freezing Congress’ accounts, arresting Hemant Soren, or arresting Arvind Kejriwal, ED is just relating it to the elections. There is no other explanation. We condemn this action. You cannot kill a democratic party right before the elections,” he told reporters.

Victory of truth: BJP welcomes Kejriwal’s arrest

“This is the situation today with a Chief Minister elected by the people. Such behaviour in India is the murder of democracy,” he told ANI. On the other hand, BJP leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa termed Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest as the “victory of truth”

“Today the truth has won. Delhi’s most corrupt CM Arvind Kejriwal has been arrested by the ED. I want to say to the people of the country that this marks the end of corruption in Delhi. He is being punished for his misdeeds,” he said on Thursday.

Calling ED’s action against Arvind Kejriwal a “process of law”, BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the arrest has been done with a view to take appropriate action against corruption.

Targeting the Aam Aadmi Party for its now scrapped liquor policy, BJP leader Shehzad Poonwalla criticised Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal for skipping multiple summons by the ED.

“The people of Delhi had voted you into power to make better ‘paathshala’ but you opened a ‘madhushala’. When action is being taken against this corruption with the nod of the court, when you skipped 9 summons of the ED, you still play the victim card. The SC has traced a money trail of 338 crore. Walking in the footsteps of Lalu Prasad Yadav, he did not cooperate with the investigation and now talks about running the government from jail,” he said on Thursday.

CPI condemns Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest

Condemning Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest by ED officials, CPI-M General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said “All the opposition leaders who defected and joined the BJP are protected and patronised.”

“Strongly condemn the arrest of Delhi CM, Shri Arvind Kejriwal by the ED. It’s the second sitting CM of the INDIA bloc to be arrested. Modi and the BJP are in panic over people’s rejection in the ongoing elections. All opposition leaders who defected and joined the BJP are protected and patronised. They are the ‘Satya Harishchandras’! These arrests will only cement people’s desire to defeat BJP, defend democracy and Indian Constitution,” he wrote on X.

PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti calls Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest ‘political vendetta’

Protesting against the arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, PDP Chief Mehbooba Mufti wrote on X, “The arbitrary arrest of yet another CM by ED reeks of political vendetta & growing authoritarianism. This cowardly act has exposed fears of the ruling party now resorting to desperate measures by manipulating elections even before they are held. History has shown that tyranny never prevails in the face of unified resistance. We will not be intimidated.”

BJP know that it will not come to power again..: Akhilesh Yadav on Kejriwal’s arrest

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticised the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal and called it an attempt of the BJP to “remove the opposition leaders” at the time of elections.

“Those who are themselves imprisoned in the fear of defeat, what will ‘they’ do by imprisoning someone else? BJP knows that it will not come to power again, and due to this fear, it wants to remove the opposition leaders from the public by any means at the time of elections, arrest is just an excuse. This arrest will give birth to a new people’s revolution,” he wrote on X.
