Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals match hit a bit of a snag before the second innings when DC coach Ricky Ponting was seen arguing with the umpire over the number of overseas players the Toyals can have on the field.

Nandre Burger, as expected, had come in as the impact sub for Shimron Hetmyer for Rajasthan and then a couple of deliveries later, RR also bought in Rovman Powell, seemingly as a sub fielder. Ponting, however, was incensed. He also seemed to be questioning how RR can start with three overseas players but have four on the field now. The reserve umpire was seen clarifying the decision with him.

As per the rules, the Royals did nothing wrong. Let’s take a look at the IPL rules and regulations:

What are the overseas player rules in the IPL?

Rule 1.2.5 states that each team may not name more than 4 Overseas players in its starting eleven for any match.

Rule 1.2.6 states that a team may not have more than 4 Overseas players on the field of play at any time during any match. Thus, if the team names the maximum 4 Overseas players in its starting XI, an Overseas player may only take the field as a substitute fielder if the player that he is replacing is an Overseas player.

Festive offer

If the team names less than 4 Overseas players in its starting XI, Overseas players may only enter the field of play as substitute fielders to the extent that by doing so, they do not take the total number of Overseas players representing that team on the field to more than 4.

In the match, Riyan Parag made a 45-ball 84 not out to lift Rajasthan Royals to a challenging 185 for 5 against Delhi Capitals.

Sent in to bat, Parag hit seven fours and six sixes as RR recovered from 36 for 3 in eighth over to a good total in the end.

He added 54 with Ravichandran Ashwin, who smashed three sixes on way to a 19-ball 29.

Parag also shared 52 runs with Dhruv Jurel (20) and another 43 with Shimron Hetmyer (14 not out).

For DC, Mukesh Kumar (1/49), Khaleel Ahmed (1/24) and Anrich Nortje (1/48), Axar Patel (1/21) and Kuldeep Yadav (1/41) snapped one wicket each.
